    4 Nov 2009 | 5:16 am
I've uploaded scans of the UK brand store calendars to flickr: front | back. The big news appears to be a free pick-a-brick box with a £50 purchase, other than that it's, unsurprisingly, full of Christmas sets. The US version is available in toomuchdew's flickr stream: front | back.

  • All LEGO half-price in Sainsburys

    30 Oct 2009 | 4:41 am
Thanks to everyone who emailed to tell me about this yesterday. Unfortunately I've been away on business and didn't get a chance to post an article about it until now. So better late than never, check out your local store and see what's left. My experience has been that even huge Sainsburys stores don't carry very much LEGO beyond Bionicle so don't get your hopes up. The offer is also available online but everything is now sold out! [Note to self: get a netbook to avoid posting delays in future!]

Last weekend (October 1-4) the BrickCon LEGO convention was held in Seattle, Washington. I drove up to the convention and had a wonderful time! As it turned out, my friend Donia who I met dancing in Santa Cruz was moving to Seattle that weekend, so I was able to combine helping her move with attending the convention. It also got me a place to crash so I could save the cost of a hotel room. I drove her car to Seattle, while she followed in a van she borrowed from a friend of hers. After the convention, I drove the van back home. On my way north, I stopped in Portland for the night Thursday…

One of the first LEGO sets I ever owned was the Spirit of St Louis, a little yellow and black (the original one was silver – see pictures on Wikipedia) airplane set that represented Charles Lindbergh’s plane from the first trans-Atlantic solo flight. It was sold as set # 456 or 661, depending on where in the world you bought it. I was six years old in 1977 when this set came out, and my parents bought it for me. I still have at least some of the parts – all mixed into my LEGO collection, of course… Why bring this up now? I just recently saw the review on Eurobricks…

It's refreshing in the sense that 99% of the Lego builds out there are built with the third dimension in mind.

DK Publishers recently released a boxed set: The LEGO Book, all about the hobby and another about minifigs (celebrating their 30th anniversary). • Another possible new Legoland

    1 Nov 2009 | 10:10 am
I recently blogged a report of a possible Legoland development deal in Florida. It seems from this report that they are also in negotiations over a possible park in Illinois. There's no hint whether this would be in addition to a potential Legoland park in Florida, or if Merlin Entertainment (owners and operators of the parks) is looking at these as competing alternatives. IMO Florida makes more sense - it's more of a destination for tourists and can operate outdoor amusements year-round; previous rumors of a potential park in Kansas never went anywhere. On the other hand, Legoland is smaller…

BZPower's latest BBC (Bionicle-Based Creations) Contest requires entrants to build one of the site's administrators. Many of the entries (my own included) are fairly banal humanoids, but as with any contest, there are some standouts. You've already seen BCii's rendition of Tufi Piyufi. Here is a version of former admin Ninjo by Shannara:The use of the wheel technique pioneered by Primus is notable, and the general spiky robotic look is just plain cool.Puffins are the animal to style your entry after if you're building Tufi Piyufi and don't want to take the humanoid route. BCii's Tufi Piyufi is certainly one of the best humanoids I've seen recently. The wings and torso sculpting are wonderful to behold, and the headdress makes good use of a Kanohi. He also knows how to present a MOC well, as evinced by the photography and lighting. The same builder has also spammed Thornax launchers and other parts to get an interesting circle guaranteed to repel darklings (and if you get that reference I love you):See the BZP topic for an entertaining monologue on how this ring of power came to be.

Mark Bellis is one of the few gurus in LEGO pneumatics whose work I've crossed with (not to mention any other areas of technical knowledge). He has some fascinating work done on LEGO pneumatic building blocks that simulate logical and other functions.Recently and in the sequence of some discussions about linear actuators an solenoids, Mark that is a strong defender of the pneumatics, made a prototype for what he called "Continuously Variable Pneumatic Control". One block that allows a set of pneumatic cylinders to stop anywhere within their range, allowing pressure and force in either…

Many of you should remember about the hype [1] we observed about one year ago, when the images from the 8259 Mini-Bulldozer first appeared.Since then, I had the idea to repeat it in a planned manner. So, I made a proposal which was very well received and this year, with the sponsorship from the LEGO Technic team, we decided to launch a challenge based on the same idea. For an "official" (or should I say "sponsored") challenge, we are restricted to release models that do not include new parts. The only 1H2010 small model fitting this criteria is the 8046 (helicopter). So the challenge TBs has…
