I hope you find this useful.

As you know, Brickset isn't a general LEGO news site or LEGO blog; our focus is very much on new set releases and availability, and on being a resource for collectors. However, once in a while, we cover more general LEGO news... There's a very good article on the BBC News website, part of their 'Tech Know' series of articles, covering adults who build with LEGO. The video and written article contain interviews with members of The Brickish Associaton, the adult LEGO user group in the UK. Being educational sets sold only to schools, these sets are extremely rare and this is the first time that pictures of the actual sets themselves, rather than catalogue scans, have been published. They are not even included in the LEGO Collector book. I still can't say where these images were taken, but you will find out: probably in March! Like last year, LEGO came up with two advent calendars, only one of which was sold in the U.S. The 7687 City advent calendar was sold everywhere, but the 6299 Pirates calendar was only available in Europe. (If you’re not familiar with advent calendars, they basically consist of 24 different gifts, one to be opened on each day of Advent, the traditional Christian season that precedes Christmas, or in other words December 1-24. These days, it’s secularized – fine by me, since I’m not religious – but the name has stuck.) Last year, LEGO accidentally shipped a few…

Hi-res pictures of some sets for Hero Factory, Bionicle's new summer replacement line, have surfaced. Bearing oddly human names and overly specialised parts (I thought Lego said this new line was supposed to be more flexible? I really dislike the arm-covering weapons as they will be difficult to use with anything besides these 45-degree arms), the sets still look all right. The leg armor and helmets may find good use for their intended purpose in other creations, as will the feet, which are probably my favorite pieces. • Week TechVideo, 2010 #05 - There is no school like the old school

Today I bring something different, that Mahjqa brought to my attention.Old LEGO Technic stuff, at the service of humor and most genius criminals... The Olsen Gang (Danish: Olsen-banden, Norwegian: Olsenbanden, German: Die Olsenbande) is an original Danish criminal gang in the fictional movies of the same name. The gang's leader is the criminal genius and habitual offender Egon Olsen. The other members of the gang are Benny and Kjeld. The gang members are harmless and never use violence. This is an excerpt from the 11th movie "Olsen-banden overgiver sig aldrig" or "The Olsen Gang never…

  • Layout Planning with BlueBrick

I have been using TrackDraw for layout planning for years. My friend and former NCLTC member Cary Clark wrote TrackDraw and I authored many of the parts in the TrackDraw library so I had a vested interest in using it.  Compared to TrackDesigner, TrackDraw was a huge improvement particularly if you were planning a large layout. But times change and Cary has phased out of the LEGO hobby and TrackDraw, while it still works, hasn’t been updated in years.  At one point I could build it from source myself but about a year ago I tried to build it and was unable to.  So the version I have…
  • Converting the Emerald Night to 9v

I built the Emerald Night a while ago and it has sat in the box down in my basement ever since.  It is a beautiful train although it really does need additional passenger cars.  A month ago when I had the e-mail dialog with my Dad about the Emerald Night, he asked me how it be converted to use a 9v motor (since he has several of them).  I know the Emerald Night comes with instructions on how to add a Power Function motor but (a) neither of us have the right motor and (b) neither of us feel like buying more motors when we already have 9v motors on hand. I thought about it a bit and decided…
  • New Trains for 2010 but limitations persist

New Trains! When I first saw some links to the 2010 trains I was excited.  These would be the first trains to be based on the Power Functions and in my opinion, the first train sets to come from LEGO since the decision to drop the 9v line.  One could argue that there were two RC sets and the Factory exclusive the Emerald Night but in my opinion, the 2010 sets are really the first sets in the Power Function era. I had my hopes up as I clicked on the links and began the browse the images.  Would there finally be some new add on rolling stock (aka individual train cars)?  Sadly there were…

I am not sure how I missed then when it was posted, but I just saw the link today on Eurobricks  (which admittedly I don’t visit very often). There is some pretty cool footage in the video and some insight into the LEGO Vault. There is also an brief view of the LEGO Hobby Train which I worked on. The model shown was designed by Holger Mathes.
  • WITC display for January – Arrrggh! Pirates

I was asked if I could put something together on short notice for the Window into the Community (aka WITC) for the Raleigh LEGO Store.  I have a lot of the things I use for NCLTC layouts in boxes in my basement but several of them that I’d like to use (e.g. my church or amusement park) aren’t well suited to the WITC window because they are too deep or too wide. So I thought about it and decided I could do a small Pirate display on short notice and it would be fun.  I have a small island I had a built a while back which is an adaptation of the Blacksmith’s Shop which I turned into an…
